WOMAN

Doing that one last thing is never easy. You think it will take only a minute but it never fails to be much more complicated that what you had imagined in your mind. The car keys were exactly where you thought they’d me, the gas was off, the iron unplugged, the door was locked but there is always one tiny thing that you missed. That tiny thing can lead to a lifetime cut short.

POLLY

Mommy. Where are we going?

ASHLEY

I have to stop this from happening again.

NARRATOR

Ashley and Polly step in front of the red Chinese cabinet. Ashley still holds the steel pipe in her hand. Polly’s head is covered in bits of broken window glass.

Ashley slowly opens the cabinet doors with great trepidation.

Inside the silver dragon mirror gleams. She stares at the mirror with increasing curiosity.

Ashley’s reflection is clear and solid but Polly’s reflection begins to thin. As Polly’s reflection fades to a shimmer, Ashley reaches towards the mirror.

Her hand is sucked to the mirror’s surface. Silver tendrils dig into her fingers.

The reflection SWIRLS revealing the mirror’s past.

In the mirror, an ASIAN BOY about ten years old leans into the cabinet. He is FREYA. He walks his fingers across the mirror counting as he reaches the thirteenth reflection.

A wave sweeps across the mirror. FREYA pokes his hand into the jell-o like surface.

FREYA GIGGLES

NARRATOR

The little boy watches in awe as a fin swims toward his hand.

FREYA pulls his fingers out as the fin draws near.Behind the mirror the fin is actually the claw of the demon. FREYA plunges his hand into the mirror’s surface.

A clawed hand grabs his wrist and yanks FREYA inside.

FREYA SHRIEKS ASHLEY GASPS EERIE WHOOSH

NARRATOR

The reflection SWIRLS again revealing another memory.

A woman with mousy brown hair enters the room. She is KELLY LEE, late thirties, her face wet with tears. She frantically searches for the FREYA. She looks behind the curtains, under the coffee table.

KELLY LEE stares at the dragon mirror. She sobs and shudders. She shakes her head vigorously.

She lifts a revolver into view and tucks the barrel under her chin.

She pulls the trigger. The back of her head explodes.

Ashley GASPS.

NARRATOR

KELLY LEE falls to the floor revealing Special Agent Agent Lee behind her. The reflection SWIRLS again.

Ashley is looking at her own reflection and an empty room behind her.

Ashley raises the steel pipe and takes aim at the dragon mirror.

GUN SLIDE CLICKS

AGENT LEE

I can’t let you do that.

Ashley turns to see Agent Lee pointing a pistol at her.

AGENT LEE

Put it down.

ASHLEY

But THE still wants Polly.

AGENT LEE

I can’t be concerned about her. I need that mirror whole.

Ashley lowers the pipe.

ASHLEY

You started all of this?

AGENT LEE

The cabinet has been in my wife’s family for many generations.

AGENT LEE (CONT'D)

Her grandmother used it to cure her husband of his cancer.

ASHLEY

At what price?

AGENT LEE

She was very old. We didn’t care if the demons took her.

ASHLEY

You should have burned this thing.

AGENT LEE

Had I only known. You see my son suffered from cerebral palsy.

ASHLEY

And you thought you could cure him?

AGENT LEE

I tested it first. I had lost part of my right pinky has a kid. When I put my hand into the mirror it came out whole.

ASHLEY

Did your son touch the 13th reflection knowingly or did you trick him like you did us?

AGENT LEE

I told him is was a game. He liked games.

ASHLEY

So you risked everything?

AGENT LEE

What would you do to save your daughter?

ASHLEY

She didn’t need the mirror. Your son pulled her inside.

AGENT LEE

I tried to get him back but my wife...

ASHLEY

The real agent Lee?

AGENT LEE

Yes. I told her what I had done and I told her what had to be done. No one believes you when you tell them about the 13 reflections. But she did. She had history with it. No one in her family ever openly talked about it but there were rumors and whispers mostly taken as superstition no different than lighting firecrackers at Chinese New Year to scare away the monster Nian.

FOOTSTEPS CLOSER

AGENT LEE

Kelly was smart, cunning and a firebrand so I took the precaution of hiding her pistol but I forgot an FBI agent always carries a back up gun. She killed herself before the demons could take her heart.

ASHLEY

Oh my god. You’re a monster.

AGENT LEE

Her death left me alone. Someone had to get FREYA back. I had to learn how these mirrors worked and what the demon wanted.

ASHLEY

So you brought more people to it?

AGENT LEE

I did. I was almost there. Just like it says right there in the cabinet. Seven hearts, seven souls. Payment for the release of my son.

ASHLEY

But I turned all your soul takers into dust. Sent them all back.

AGENT LEE

I’ll make more.

NARRATOR

Agent Lee places a large piece of broken window on a chair in front of the cabinet.

NARRATOR (CONT'D)

He adjusts the mirror to create endless reflections.

AGENT LEE

In fact let’s start right now.

Agent Lee aims his pistol at Ashley. Gun rattle

Do it.

AGENT LEE

ASHLEY

No. I won’t.

Gun rattle

Ashley gasps Polly whines

ASHLEY

You wouldn’t shoot a child.

AGENT LEE

What makes you think that? Do it. Count.

NARRATOR

Ashley moves to the dragon mirror. She walks her fingers cross the reflections and counts out loud.

ASHLEY

...Eleven, twelve, thirteen.

NARRATOR

A wave washes across the dragon mirror’s surface. The surface ripples as if some great fish swims just below.

Ashley steps back from the mirror. A huge goat horned demon floats into view and looks out from the dragon mirror. It lifts a clawed hand and points at Polly.

ASHLEY

Why Polly?

AGENT LEE

I'm sorry that she ever became involved.

AGENT LEE (CONT'D)

That was purely an accident. But without her, I never would have discovered the key to getting FREYA back. She has to go back in. Things must stay in balance.

Agent Lee motions at Polly GUN RATTLE

AGENT LEE

We can get them back. Both of our kids. If we work together.

NARRATOR

Polly moves in front of the cabinet.

Inside the dragon mirror, the demon studies Ashley. The demon points at Polly’s reflection. It slowly fades.

The demon points at Ashley’s reflection. Ashley’s reflection becomes gossamer and fades but as it does Polly’s reflection become solid and clear.

The demon cocks its head at Ashley. They lock eyes for a beat.

POLLY

I love you mommy.

Ashley KISSES Polly on her forehead

ASHLEY

I love you more.

NARRATOR

Ashley nods at the demon then leaps into the mirror.

With the debt in balance the demon and Ashley vanish. A wave sweeps across the dragon mirror’s surface and the enchantment is gone.

POLLY

No!

NARRATOR

Polly rushes to the dragon mirror. She hammers her fists against the now solid surface.

NARRATOR

Agent Lee steps up and puts his hands on Polly’s shoulders.

He taps the barrel of his gun against the dragon mirror’s solid surface.

AGENT LEE

It’s closed now. Everything is in balance.

Don’t fret little one. We can get her back, but you’ll have to help me.

MAIN THEME

NARRATOR

Polly’s reflection is solid now but Agent Lee’s reflection is nowhere to be seen in the dragon mirror.

Polly glances at her reflection in the dragon mirror.

Like a flicker of lightening in the blink of an eye something looks back.
