INTERIOR HOSPITAL ROOM AMBIENCE

WOMAN

My mom used to say that trust earned over a lifetime can be lost in the blink of an eye. She also said lost trust is a debt that might never be repaid. But sometimes what we think we see, what we eye witness, what we swear is the absolute truth is not the entire story. Memories have only two dimensions. Life has five.

NARRATOR

Ray and Ashley stand alert in Polly’s bedroom. Ray adjusts the weight of the duffle bag on his shoulder. Ashley clutches a long kitchen knife. They look from each other to the bathroom door. In front of the closed door is a tiny book shelf, a toy chest and two small chairs.

ASHLEY

It was huge, Ray. Its skin was rough like a crocodile but it was sort of human shaped. It had long claws, teeth like ice pics, and its eyes. Oh my god. It had yellow snake eyes.

RAY

And this thing was coming out of the mirror?

ASHLEY

Reaching out. Clawing at me. It was predatory. Angry.

RAY

And this is your barricade? Ya know, for someone that builds things for a living, I'm not impressed.

ASHLEY

It's what I had.

RAY

If this thing can come out of a mirror, what makes you think a door will stop it?

ASHLEY

You think I’m crazy?

RAY

Stressed out for sure.

ASHLEY

You don’t believe me.

RAY

Skeptical maybe, but...

RAY WRESTLES WITH HIS DUFFLE BAG

RAY ( CONT' D) (CONT'D)

Not taking any chances though.

ASHLEY

What do you have in there? A pipe?

RAY

One and a half inch hardened Columbus steel with a solid lug welded on the end. I call it Molly.

ASHLEY

Molly?

RAY

Molly Bend Em.

ASHLEY

That’s not what I saw in the mirror.

RAY

That’s the biggest rat I’ve ever seen.

ASHLEY

That’s not what I saw.

RAY

Where’s its tail? It’s cut clean off.

ASHLEY

Ray. Believe me. The thing in the mirror was huge.

RAY

It’s just a rat, Ash.

BATHROOM DOOR CLOSES

ASHLEY

This might sound crazy, but I think Polly’s disappearance has something to do with the book she was reading to me.

RAY

Was that the book with a pot smoking caterpillar and a girl on acid?

ASHLEY

Not that book. This one.

LUCY’S NOTEBOOK RUSTLES PAGES TURN

ASHLEY (CONT'D)

Right here is says you can go into a mirror.

RAY

Huh. Well. This is a lot to think about.

ASHLEY

Please don’t think I'm crazy, Ray. I couldn’t stand it if you thought I was crazy.

RAY

No. I’d don’t. Cross my heart.

ASHLEY

You are important to me. I shouldn’t have let you go.

RAY

You mean a lot to me or I wouldn’t have come back.

ASHLEY

I’m so glad you did.

RAY

You pull on me like gravity. I love you Ashley.

ASHLEY

Do you even know what love means?

RAY

It means I can be totally dumb and know that you won't laugh AT me.

ASHLEY

Most of the time.

RAY

That I can cry and know that you'll comfort me.

ASHLEY

All of the time.

RAY

It means I can tell you my fears and know that you won't scorn me. In a word, its trust.

ASHLEY

Can I trust you Ray?

RAY

All of the time. But it’s late and I’m exhausted.

ASHLEY

You can't go.

RAY

Nothing is going to come out of that mirror

ASHLEY

Then you sleep here.

RAY

Now you're talking.

ASHLEY

Alone.

So you’re telling me to sit on this?

CUT TO

AGENT LEE

Just for a little while longer.

SHERIFF

I’ve got a distraught Grandmother calling every ten minutes, a hysterical college kid babbling on about mirrors and a magical dismembered arm in my file cabinet probably playing rock paper scissors with itself...and I should just do nothing?

AGENT LEE

I’ve been in contact with my office, they are scouring the database for any reference to this situation. It will take some time.

SHERIFF

Why would it take time? How could something like this have ever happened before?

AGENT LEE

You might be surprised.

KNOCK AT THE OFFICE DOOR

SHERIFF

Enter.

DEPUTY

Hey Sheriff. No answer at Mina’s place yesterday. The neighbor saw the roommate heading out to work. Shall I check back today?

SHERIFF

Naw. I might as well head over there myself since I’ve got nothing else to do except sit on my hands. If that’s okay with you Agent Lee?

AGENT LEE

Shall I join you?

SHERIFF

For such a boring, routine thing? I’d rather you stay here in case your office finds something of interest.

AGENT LEE

As you wish Sheriff.

When Johnathan died. The doctors at the hospital thought I was unstable. That sparked the investigation. They wanted to take Polly away. I can't take that risk again.

RAY

Then I guess we’ll have to solve this on our own.

I’ll cover for you at work.

I'd start with the book.

Yes, of course, Lucy.

Ashley plucks out a paper receipt that sticks out of broken the mirror.

SHERIFF

Oh my gawd. This is getting too weird.
